Elevating Your Photography Presentation by Manfred Mueller
Manfred is an award winning Ottawa, Canada based amateur photographer who travels nationally and internationally to capture unique and compelling images from wherever he goes. From hunting with the Bushmen of the Kalahari to celebrating Holi in Northern India, he gets right into the middle of the action to capture these activities when and where they are happening.
CAPA trains its judges to consider the way the technical aspects of an image have been executed, how the elements have been arranged and the emotional impact the image has on the viewer. As this is how competitions are judged, club members are interested in this information to improve their own work.
Most photographic training materials concentrate on the technical aspects of photography. When it comes to materials on Composition, it tends to be directed at the “Rules of Composition”. Materials on creating images that make an emotional connection with the viewer are not generally available.
This presentation deals with these two elements of an effective image; how the elements of the image are organized. Composition, use of (negative) space and distracting elements in the image. It also covers how a strong image creates an emotional connection with the viewer, mood, impact, subject and imagination.
The presentation shows how many of the great photographers, both present and past approached these concepts. Numerous examples demonstrate these principles using the presentation’s author, Manfred Mueller’s works.

Family Documentary Photography Presentation by Amanda Anderton
Documentary photography is storytelling at its finest. No props, posing or bribery required. It's a representation of who your family is in this moment of time, the relationships you have forged and the love that you share. In Day In The Life documentary sessions I record moments as they happen, with no posing. It's just your family doing their everyday thing.
Born and raised in Red Deer, I’ve been capturing memories for clients in and around the area since 2010. Mother, wife, feminist, gardener, collector of family memories. I love quirky facts, intriguing quotes and good conversation shared over a latte or a pint. amandaandertonphotography.format.com |

Flash Photography Presentation by Nikon
While using an external flash can seem intimidating to some photographers, Nikon Canada’s ‘Intro to Flash’ presentation starts off with very simple examples that shows the progression of using no flash, to using a flash-on-camera, and then moving to the best option for ultimate creativity, taking the flash off the camera entirely. We will discuss technical terms like High Speed Sync, flash exposure compensation, and will delve into the requirements for getting your flash off-camera. If you want to push your portraiture to a different level then flash photography can take it there, and starting with an ‘Intro to Flash’ presentation is a great way to see all the possibilities.
Chris Ogonek has been with Nikon Canada for over 14 years and is currently the Product & Training Manager. He has extensive knowledge in many branches of photography, from sports to landscapes to portraiture. Helping to remove the mystery of the technical aspects of photography is what he loves doing, whether it’s with budding photographers who are pushing themselves to learn more, or pro photographers who want to know the latest tech that’s available. The equipment will be Nikon-specific but the principles will apply to any modern flash equipment. Be sure to bring your questions! |

The Heart of the Photograph by David duChemin.
I’m David duChemin and I want to help you make the strongest, most compelling photographs of your life, and to do so with joy and freedom, to make photographs that are more than just good, but truly your own.
I’m a photographer, and author, based—when I’m home—on Vancouver Island, Canada. A former humanitarian photographer creating images of hope and dignity for the international NGO community, my work pivoted after a life-altering accident while photographing in Italy in 2011. Now a below-the-knee amputee, my calling lies in turning my lens toward the natural world and nudging others to pursue a life of intention and creativity.
“Life,” to quote the late Helen Keller, “is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

Image Critique by Lewis Katz
"Emotive displays were not commonplace in my home growing up. The camera and the image became an outlet for suppressed feelings as well as for artistic expression. Many years after college I lived in southern York county Pennsylvania and its rural beauty. Although I had been out west as a teenager it was here that I truly discovered landscape photography. Through my career in the travel industry many other trips followed including visiting most of the major National Parks.
After moving to Baltimore in 2001 I discovered and joined the Baltimore Camera Club. I was quickly in awe and humbled by the talent and more importantly I found the companionship of fellow members which is so important to me to this day. The Baltimore Camera Club remains an integral part of my photography life. I have been honored and have received many awards from the competitions at the club. Teaching photography is another essential component of my photography life as I love sharing my passion. I currently teach for the Johns Hopkins Odyssey program, the Capital Photography Center of DC and for private students as well. I live for those aha moments that only teaching can provide." Andrea Hatch from Curiosity Art & Framing will be joining us to talk about the value of printing our photographs, her printing process, as well as the framing process.
Andrea Tucker-Hatch through her career as an illustrator, curator and art conservator for museums, has developed a broad knowledge of exhibition design and creation for public spaces. This knowledge spans from single item exhibitions to area design and full exhibition spaces. Telling a store 3 dimensionally within a space is a specialty.
Internationally she is known for her award winning 3dimensional framing which includes the design and development of the interior story as well as the 3 dimensional sculpture of the often untraditional design and shaped frame.
After a move to Stettler, Alberta, an opportunity to jump into custom framing came through the acquisition of her shop, Cabinet of Curiosities. She has found the work very satisfying.
“I like the creativity involved in designing bespoke for clients both publicly and privately, it is never the same thing from one day to the next,” said Andrea.
As a consultant to cultural institutions that are charged with preserving and protecting art, Andrea is particularly interested in conservation techniques. One of her favorite aspects of custom framing is coming up with innovative framing designs and materials that allow for creativity and adhere to preservation needs.

Wes Bell’s presentation is titled “Unravelling Snag”. He will be sharing his series titles “Snag" and will address how to create a series of images.
Wes Bell was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. From an early age, he was fascinated by art, which led him to the studio-intensive program at the Alberta University of the Arts (formerly ACAD), where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography.
Wes's sole focus is his passion for fine art photography. Gone are the days of large photography crews as now it is just Wes and his camera. Today he photographs outdoors on location, responding to the detail and natural beauty in the sparsely populated landscapes found on the edges of nearby towns and cities. The scenes are simple and ordinary. Based isolating and elevating the unseen, they expose man's encroachment on nature and nature's return of the favour. Attuned to the impermanent, ambiguous, and abstract nature of life, the photographs are multilayered in metaphors, aligning our perceptions with our emotions so that they can become accessible and visible.
Bell's photographic series Snag has been exhibited internationally in both solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, including Oil.

Shane Turgeon is an award-winning nature photographer focused on landscapes, the night sky, storms, and wildlife. His work has been featured by Canadian Geographic, the Natural Landscape Photography Awards, PhotoLife magazine, Black Rapid, the CBC and more and he is a proud ambassador for f-stop gear and McBain Camera.
Shane began his photography journey in 2015 as an escape from both his busy professional world and a debilitating depression. While out walking his dogs, Shane began taking photos of small scenes - flowers, trees, frost covered grass - with his iPhone 4 and it helped him rediscover his connection with nature. Soon after he found himself desiring to be outside more and more and photography became the perfect vehicle for him to begin his healing journey. He began to cultivate an “in-the-moment” mindfulness while out in the landscape which continues to drive his work today. Full bio can be seen here

Dave Flewwelling has been a long time resident of Red Deer. Dave grew up alongside his older brother Mike and at an early age the boys received a vinyl copy of KISS “Destroyer” from their all too cool grandmother. From those early days huddled next to the Fisher Price record player listening to KISS, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden the die was clearly cast. Early in 2004, Dave headed to the local McBain Camera Store in Red Deer and purchased his first Canon Rebel xTi camera. With little knowledge of DSLR cameras, Dave set out to understand his new toy and road companion. Dave not only became skilled at documenting nature’s raw beauty around him, but fun events in between. With several local bands surging in Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary, Dave began to position himself to infiltrate the music scene and document his passion.
With a pending Motorhead appearance in Edmonton, Dave sent the management an email requesting a media pass. To his surprise, the request was honored! Nervously, he made his way to the media pit at the Motorhead show.
The show opened with the traditional opening words from the Chief, “We Are Motorhead and We Play Rock n’ Roll!” – with the end of that phrase he spit the cigarette at my camera. Those words were the beginning. From that day forward began my adventure as a concert venue photographer.
Photography is my medium, my camera is my outlet; just as the music and instruments are the outlets for the musician. The ability to document passion on stage with passionate imagery is inspiring and is likened to living a dream with few regrets.

Veronica Reist, co-founder of the Olds Image Seekers Club, loves not only loves taking pictures, but also displaying them with pride and joy. Macro (extreme close-up) photography, along with double exposure photographs (using two images to create one), are some of her favourite methods of capturing moments.
The most valuable trait of a photo, she says, is the power that it has to “take you back to the moment.”
Her passion is what fuelled her experience and her constant practice of photography is what led to her exposure and eventual profession.

JP has spent the last 5 years photographing the same group of Mexica, or Aztec, dancers. In that time he learned how connected the Mexica are to their mythology. To stories passed down across generations. That’s when he decided that, as these stories were so vital to Mexica culture, they needed to play a bigger role in his portraits. This is a talk is about what happened next. About how a desire to tell stories visually, ended up changing his entire creative process, and the way people react to his photos.
